Friends – A Rather Prophetic Movie
In 1971, I was 19 years old dating a young lady who was 17. I was very much in love and thought she was too. We went to see the movie ”Friends” starring Anicee Alvina and Sean Bury. The movie was about a very young teen couple who run away to live together and start a family in the French Camargue. The most interesting thing about this movie was that Elton John and Bernie Taupin wrote the score for it before they were famous. And the music was wonderful – some of his best. This movie was where I discovered Elton John. Well, young people my age were greatly affected…

The Blizzard of 1966
I’ll never forget this storm. My 13 year-old self remembers waking up in Maryland to 3 feet of snow and having a number of days off school. The NWS clarifies the story of the blizzard of 1966: Here’s how the NWS recalls the 1966 blizzard: “January 30-31, 1966: A blizzard struck Maryland and the Northeast US. It began following morning lows of subzero in some portions of the state. Temperatures remained in the single digits as the wind and snow increased. Gusts of 50 to 60 mph caused white-out conditions over portions of western Maryland and into the Baltimore and Washington areas. “Hagerstown reported 15 inches of snow on top…

My Memoirs
No, this post is not going to be a long book on my life. Rather, I’d like to state here that there is a story inside me that wants to get out so I have started an outline about my life. Maybe it will result in my memoirs. Only time will tell. I’d like to think that I have gained at least a little wisdom in my life so that my story could shed some light and help someone out there. I have learned a lot in my life the hard way. And a few things I have learned the easy way. The hard way and the easy way mostly…

EC-121 Lockheed Super Constellation
This is the plane I worked on in the Air Force. The old Lockheed Super Constellation from the 50s. Our planes were radar planes used in Iceland and Vietnam. I was an autopilot tech, so I maintained the old PB-10 autopilots used in these planes. We basically had 3 models. First was the EC-121G, a passenger planes outfitted with seats and a galley. Then there were the radar planes, the D and T models. All of these had a large radome on the bottom. Some of the planes had one on top that looked like a shark fin. In Iceland, we provided radar coverage when Soviet planes flew through the…

Goodbye in Her Eyes – Bittersweet California Memories
When I was young, you might have called me a nerd if the word had been in use at that time. I was a quiet person who kept to himself. In high school, I hung out with the nerdy guys, discussing the universe, our origins and the latest electronics invention. I was into ham radio and electronics. I built my own music radio station as a hobby. I was actually afraid of girls. Though I had 3 sisters, I did not know how to act around girls, though I had a number of crushes. In 1967, we moved to California in the San Francisco Bay Area. This is where I…

The Mountain House
My grandparents had a home on 80 acres in the Appalachian foothills in north Georgia when I grew up. I used to spend my summers there. Here is a short trip through those years beginning when the family built the house until now as the property sits on Zillow and is up for sale.
