Friends – A Rather Prophetic Movie

In 1971, I was 19 years old dating a young lady who was 17. I was very much in love and thought she was too. We went to see the movie ”Friends” starring Anicee Alvina and Sean Bury. The movie was about a very young teen couple who run away to live together and start a family in the French Camargue.

The most interesting thing about this movie was that Elton John and Bernie Taupin wrote the score for it before they were famous. And the music was wonderful – some of his best. This movie was where I discovered Elton John.

Well, young people my age were greatly affected by this movie because it was so relatable to my generation. It wasn’t a well known movie but has maintained a loyal following all these years.

For me personally the movie was very prophetic to my life. I saw the movie with my girlfriend who I was convinced was my life partner. By the end of that year, a very difficult medical condition would change our lives and by the start of the next year, I would never see her again.

SPOILER ALERT: And the movie’s ending was just as haunting. It was one of those movies where the audience was watching an inevitable situation happening outside of the couple’s paradise that would surely end everything. Yet all you saw at the end was her waving goodbye to him as he went off to work skipping and dancing. The music starts and the frame freezes with him walking away. And that’s it! You were left clutching your armrest knowing what was going to happen but never see it. Haunting!!

In doing some research tonight, I was amazed at how many people my age loved this little movie and still call it a favorite. Apparently, it can still be purchased but the copies are not very good. But Amazon recently made in available to view in their library.

Im including a tribute video here that includes some footage from the movie. Enjoy.
